I have been a healthcare and special needs interior designer for 30+ years and have had the advantage of also being an Interior Design Professor. This gave me the opportunity to hire graduates and place graduates from the program into internships. I saw in Shundra, as a student, a unique talent and hired her as an intern for my firm. It was one of the best decisions I could have made. She quickly proved to be a most valuable asset and stayed with me for many years as my lead designer.
From my standpoint, in designing for special need populations, for a design project to move from the basics of answering the functional needs of the client to the higher plane of being an outstanding project making a real difference in lives through design, requires specialized skills. The ability to research evidence based solutions, to work with interdisciplinary teams to design products and rooms that work for special situations while also being affordable, and to creatively address difficult situations that not only require high functionality but also encompass beauty to create non-institutional environments, is a hard design team to put together.
Shundra has the unique qualification of performing and understanding all of these tasks which is rare to find in one person. I attributed it partly due to her background as a practicing engineer that gave her the ability to design projects that really worked, along with her true empathy for the situations our clients are requiring design help with, to her amazing creativity combined with detailed budget control. Shundra to was able to lead us on from good projects to amazing projects.
As an added bonus to me, It was also not hard to see Shundra’s ability to connect with our clients and communicate our designs to them. She has an engaging personality and this communication skillset worked well for me. Being an educator, I have often been asked to give presentations to designers and architects as well as non-profit organizations on a local and national level. She was able to jump in and fill this role as a co-presenter that made the presentations so much easier and better.
It is not often I can give such a great recommendation to a truly great designer.
